In RH9 (as in all -- or most -- earlier releases), /bin/sh is a symlink to /bin/bash. Changing the script to point to bash itself didn't help. For reasons that are just now becoming clear to me, when I mv-ed everything to root's ~ directory, the permissions problem went away. INSTALL must run from a directory with pure root:root permissions all the way back to /. --Doc Savage Fairview Heights, IL
