Well if you build without the 3ware then upgrade the kernel and rebuild kernel
it will work. I did this only because I was upgrading and added the raid. I and
probably others like me can't afford the 7xxx (my 6400  was only $50 on ebay). I
am supprised at RedHat and SuSE for not identifying the problem and fixing it. I
will try your idea and let the list know.
