Java installation secret?

Is there some last manual step needed to make Java work with Mozilla? I
have Sun's j2sdk1-4.1_03-fcs and the latest mozilla-1.4-11 from rawhide
installed, but whenever I encounter a Java applet on a web site I get a
"Default Plugin" advisory window that says:

"This page contains information of a type (application/x-java-vm) that
can only be viewed with theappropriate Plug-in."

What's the secret to getting Java to work with Mozilla?
