what i did was to remount / with "noatime" while the system was running.
that didn't seem to change anything, either.

so i guess rebooting with / mounted as ext2 is my next strategy.
is there a utility that can show me processes and their respective
disk activity?  "top" certainly doesn't seem to help there.
