setting up the /root directory

yes, I am new at this

If someone might care to respond, the situation with the install is this:

I don't know what pkgs I will elect Not to append (I need many, from
graphics through C++ packages, as well as webbrowsers and windowing apps).

Yet, in order to have say, 200M of free space (just in case), using the
gui-wizard interface (Not the druid), the / directory needs to be of fixed
size. The default mode of the / directory, however, is to allow the /
directory (a diff partition, yes) to *grow* as necessary.

Given I have had a freeze up as the system directories were *full* (don't
know why -- just added a java applet and boom! -- gad a warning would
have been nice!!!), i am inclined to follow the default method. However,
I am continuously warned to have at least 200M of free space -- been a
long time, but at one point this was definitely a must.

(get this, I have a 9Gig drive and am worrying...I had an Apple 2 with 64K
at one point and felt no pain!!!)

Anyway, with all the relative *havetos* of swap, boot, etc, plus
dedicating 1.5G to /usr/local, and a bit to /www and /home...I am down to
8M of free space if I let the / go wild. Is this the way to go? or to
constrain the /? Please don't tell me it really doesn't matter, cuz that
is probably why I can't decide.

To anyone who made it through all the above, thanks for your patience...

Thanks for any help

mgolter
