I have the same problem in RH9.

I fixed this while mounting the w2k shares from the rc.local as
background
processes with the & at the end of the line.

It works fine.

rc.local:

smbmount //w2k/share1 /mnt/share1 -o
username=xxx,password=xxx,uid=xx,gid=xx
&
smbmount //w2k/share2 /mnt/share2 -o
username=xxx,password=xxx,uid=xx,gid=xx
&
smbmount //w2k/share3 /mnt/share3 -o
username=xxx,password=xxx,uid=xx,gid=xx
&
