Your fstab file looked proper. What is the output of doing a directory listing as below:

ls -la /dev/cdrom*

If it is a cdwriter, the output should be similar to below:

ls -la /dev/cdrom*
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root     9 Feb 24 13:39 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/scd0
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root    9 Mar 10 18:26 /dev/cdrom1 -> /dev/scd1

Both of my cdroms are symlinked to /dev/scdx and both work when trying to mount the cdroms.

If your symlinks point to /dev/hdx - it might be what is causing the problem. I had that sort of problem with the betas.
