Try to mount the drive manually without fstab involvement via "mount -o
ro -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom" but before that open up a terminal
and enter "tail -f /var/log/messages" and watch for problems and I/O
errors when you enter the first line, the I/O errors should also get fed back
to the console you issue the mount entry.

Make sure you use a known good CD.
