One solution is to use the unicode encoding - hold down control-shift and type e7 (or c7 for capital - except it doesn't work in gnome-terminal for some reason - time to visit bugzilla again).

Sometimes, it is needed. I was interested in getting my ethernet working. Not diagnosing the ills of changes to certain files.
Most people compare the two file versions. (old and new). Then they migrate the changes to the newer configuration file.
