If you read the errata associated to this kernel, you will see that the
e1000 module has been modified since 2.4.20-8. I would boot from the
2.4.20-8 kernel if you still have it installed, and if you don't get the
same problem, report it in bugzilla ( http://bugzilla.redhat.com/ )
against the kernel package.
