If you're looking to make package management / upgrading easier, may I
suggest using apt-get/synaptic or yum.

1) Can apt-get remove a program installed from tarball? I use "apt-get" for 2 major functions only update or upgrade. This is new to me.

2) Synatic and Yum are also new to me. Currently I am using "checkinstall" at time of installing a tarball. It builds a RPM for uninstallation. I am also interested to learn some other programs.
