Do the following:

rpm -qa | grep XFree86-Mesa

You should get:

XFree86-Mesa-libGLU-4.3.0-2.1
XFree86-Mesa-libGL-4.3.0-2.1

My output of this command is:

XFree86-Mesa-libGL-4.3.0-2
XFree86-Mesa-libGLU-4.3.0-2

Interesting. I completed the download of the 3 ISOs from RHN yesterday and have the Mesa Library versions I mentioned above. These libraries are the same ones on my disc 1. I can't imagine why yours would be different???

Oops, my mistake. Indeed on my Shrike disc 1 I have 4.3.0-2 versions of XFree. I am running a Radeon 8500le video card. DRI did not work for this card under the XFree4.2. With XFree4.3 DRI support became available. So instead of waiting for Red Hat 9 I actually downloaded the XFree-4.3.0-2.1.src.rpm from rawhide and compiled it under Psyche Kernel 2.4.20-2.54. Apparently when I upgraded to Shrike the install was clever enough to realize I had a newer version of XFree than was on the installation disc so it left it. Hence I am running the rawhide version of XFree86 so perhaps you do have to upgrade to XFree-4.3.0-2.1 to get the build to work after all. Sorry.

Of course this means I should probably recompile XFree for the Shrike 2.4.20-8 kernel. Like I said in my first EMail ... I was lucky. FWIW I have had absolutely no problems with XFree-4.3.0-2.1.
