I had sound problems at one time.  Banged my head against the wall.  Found
I had to do two things...

1.  Turn off the PC speaker in the BIOS (I've a Dell).

2.  Bring up aumix and make sure that Pcm and/or (forget which one) Pcm2
levels are not set too low.  On my system they were by default coming up
at about 25%.
