In fact "I've never tried" ... 

let's try now then:

in my inittab I have x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon, and
/etc/X11/prefdm is a sh script that eventually starts xdm. xdm will then
start other processes. *I think* you can tell xdm to start directly your
application (-session ...)

	OR

http://people.redhat.com/alikins/ltsp/autologin/

then tweak .xinitrc to make it start the browser only (but what if the
browser crashes and X not?)
