I was finally able to resolve this issue (with help from Markku Kolkka). All that was needed was a symbolic link from /dev/cdrom to /dev/scd0. It seems that "redhat-config-packages" (the package management utility) accesses the CD-ROM drive through the "/dev/cdrom" device node. Thanks everybody for their interest.
