Can't see any mistake in there. But copying it into the mail
could have altered the original encoding.

One way for you to track it down would be to divide it into two
halves and run "service syslog restart" as long as the error is
still present. You should be able to find a bad half pretty fast.

You would get the error for instance if you wrote

mail.                                        /var/log/maillog

instead of

mail.*                                       /var/log/maillog
