RE: updating kernel using up2date

I have had no problems letting Up2date update the kernel. All I had to do
was to recompile my Video drivers and all was well. It automatically adds
the new kernel (Kernels if you have an SMP system like me) to the Grub boot
menu (which I use). I believe they simply added that function because
some/most people don't wish to have their kernel automatically updated. And
prefer to do it manually. But if you don't have any special stuff
added/removed from your current kernel, then it's safe to update if you wish
to.

Subject: updating kernel using up2date

Howdy All,

I have previously upgraded my kernel manually(by-recompiling) several
time.

Recently I signed up for RedHat's up2date account. When I run up2date, I
get the following:

---------------------------------------------------------------
[root@xxxx root]# up2date -u

Fetching package list for channel: redhat-linux-i386-8.0...
########################################

Fetching Obsoletes list for channel: redhat-linux-i386-8.0...
########################################

Fetching rpm headers...
The following Packages were marked to be skipped by your configuration:

Name Version Rel Reason
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---
kernel 2.4.18 26.8.0Pkg
name/pattern
kernel-source 2.4.18 26.8.0Pkg
name/pattern

None of the packages you requested were found, or they are already
updated.
-------------------------------------------------------------

My question: Is it safe to update the kernel using up2date?

On this server I dont have a custom kernel. It is the kernel that came on
the RedHat 8.0 CDs. So will be safe updating the kernel using up2date?

Thanks
Saqib Ali
