I meant to mention that you should be able to use the touchpad _and_
an external mouse (plugged into the ps/2 port) at the same time, no
problem.

But if the touchpad is working as a different type of mouse (eg,
serial type or whatever), then it is still possible to use both if
you manually edit the MOUSETYPE parameter in /etc/sysconfig/mouse
with the -M option for gpm (ie, to configure multiple mice).  If
this is the case, then the next trick with the XF86Config file is to
define two different mice as InputDevice's, then use both in the
main ServerLayout section.
