"make clean" here is obsolete.

Hmmm. Most recent documentation I have with RedHat 8.0 is to perform this step. I am reading from Red Hat Linux 8.0, The Official Red Hat Linux Customization Guide, Copyright (c) 2002 by Red Hat, Inc. When did that step become obsolete?

Correct. The manually installed kernel is not registered in the RPM
database. You could force removal of the package, however, with
adding RPM option --nodeps. On the other hand, what's wrong about
keeping the 2.4.18-19.8.0 kernel as a backup kernel?

You know, there it was in the man pages! >DOH!<

I don't usually keep old kernels. I don't usually keep old versions of anything...usually.

Thanks! I appreciate the pointer.
