xfs is off, yet X couldn't be happier

Okay, I'm confused.

I understand this much: there are two different font
systems in RedHat 8.0, and different applications use
each system, depending on whether they're Gtk1 or
Gtk2.

I've got a host of Gtk1 apps I use like Xchat and
Galeon. At one point, I had them set up those apps to
use the MS core fonts; they're definitely installed in
multiple locations. The Gtk2 apps use these fonts
without trouble.

Coming back to Psyche after a few months, those fonts
are no longer listed in the Fonts dialog. Thinking I
had somehow messed up the install, I reinstalled the
fonts according to the instructions on
http://corefonts.sourceforge.net. However, nothing
seemed to update in the list provided by "xlsfonts".

I've played with /etc/X11/fs/config, mkfontdir and
ttmkfdir to no end. Trying to provoke a change, I
turned xfs off and rebooted, expecting several great
errors on next boot. However, strangely, everything is
fine. I'm currently booted into X with xfs stopped.
xlsfonts still provides the same list of fonts, and
nothing changes.

I'm stuck, and I would appreciate some pointers as to
how to proceed.
