RE: 8.0 Problems - SIS900 series controller will not load.

I appear to be in the same situation that Christopher A. Williams was in on 02 Oct 2002:

https://listman.redhat.com/pipermail/psyche-list/2002-October/000424.html

namely trying to figure out how to get a SiS900 ethernet driver to load with RedHat 8.0. I installed the 2.4.18-19.8.0 kernel which is supposed to include support for the SiS900:

Ethernet interface not working on SiS 963 south bridge (SiS 648 chipset)
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=77258

and indeed, the module does now load. The problem is that the driver fails to activate. I see encouraging messages from dmesg:

eth0: Realtek RTL8201 PHY transceiver found at address 1,
eth0: Using transciever found at address 1 as default
eth0: SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet at 0x9800, IRQ 0, 00:e0:18:ea:28:88

but the system refuses to ping and ifconfig shows zero activity.

Anyone figured out what's needed to get the SiS900 driver to work with this hardware ?

FWIW, this is an ASUS P4S8X motherboard.

Cheers !

Nigel
