I think the gimp also has it's own print interface and drivers, which may be important if you need very high quality color output. I just print to the system defined (CUPS) printers with the gimp, but I don't have a color printer.
I have 'just' printed from GIMP to my photo printer using CUPS, and although it works, it does seem to take an age longer than the Win32 native Epson drivers. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

ISTRT the printer drivers /use/ gimp in same fashion - or was that the old way of doing things? I always get a bit lost trying to follow the full printing process!
