Logging in as su - should have done the trick. I installed by downloading tar ball and copying files to /plugins manually. My version didn't have an installation script. Maybe there's something wrong with the install script? Got Flash 6 tar ball from:

http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&P5_Language=English

Clear install instructions in the README file

Hi Bob,

I logged in as jlowell, not as root, but first entered su - in the terminal before typing the needed commands. That should do it, should it not?
