If I'm following you correctly: # grub --device-map=/boot/grub/device.map from a shell. I'm not sure if you can specify device.map in the Grub Boot shell or not. I'm not sure of the technical details, but editing device.map and re-installing grub to the MBR worked for me. That was after I tried to edit grub.conf and swap hd(0,0) with hd(1,0), which did not work, but I didn't re-write grub to the MBR after that either (docs didn't say I had to)...
