I am NO-WHERE near as knowledgeable as most of the guys here, but i must ask.
Did you just try re-configuring X?

ie:  
root# xf86config

save your old file (/etc/X11/XF86Config , note upper case ) and try it.
a lot of times its bailed me out when i couldn't make heads or tails out
of the errors.
