Check /var/log/messages for hints about that. Make sure /etc/init.d/xfs exists, and is executable. Try starting it manually: # /etc/init.d/xfs start Note any errors that occur (in /var/log/messages). If that doesn't work, try starting xfs directly: # /usr/X11R6/bin/xfs -daemon -droppriv Note any errors that occur. If none of this helps, perhaps another service is failing to start. Make a note of any other services that fail to start, and look for relevant errors in /var/log/messages. If you have trouble determining what services are or aren't starting properly because the screen clears soon after the system boots, look for this line in /etc/inittab: 1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty1 Edit it so that it looks like this: 1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty --noclear tty1 This will keep the screen from clearing after the system boots, so that you might actually have a chance to read any errors reported. Personally, I think this should be how it is installed by default, but that's not a decision I get to make... :) I really don't understand the rationale behind clearing the screen before you've had a chance to read what's on it to see if anything is broken...
