Before you do all that, it may well be easier to figure out what's
actually wrong.  Boot the system into a run level that doesn't start
X, like either single-user mode, or run level 3.  Then, have a look at
the logs.  First log file to check would be /var/log/XFree86.0.log.
If you don't see any errors there, you can try ~/.xsession-errors.
