Sounds like you have not properly configured your machine to use cups.
psyche does not use cups by default. If you check back on this thread "RE:

I guess I was a bit peeved when I wrote the original message... I had forgotten
to switch the print system from LPR to CUPS. At least I can now print in black
and white.

I've finally found that my printer will not print in colour, because the

colour mechanism is defective. At least, it can or should print in
monochrome. LEXMARK Z53, (parallel-port, usb)

on *his* system. It only will print in monochrome Black. (That'll teach me

to buy a

display item from Radio Shack!!! <*grrrr*> ....).

So take it back? Send it to Lexmark for repair? It should be under warranty, every display item I've bought at Radio Shack was considered new, and priced the same as new. price watch lists them ~$90 total.

I don't understand how Lexmark calculates the warranty period. IMHO,
one would think that it is counted from the _date of purchase_. But NOOOO!
Instead, I checked via the web, and the guarantee period does NOT match
from the date when I purchased it. In addition, since it was the last one
in the store (the display model), Radio Shack refused to gave me a cut on
the price claiming that Lexmark controls the prices, so I shelled out CAD
$199 (plus Fed. and Provincial sales taxes).

so, I'm resigned to printing in B & W ... until such time that I can either

repair the printer, or purchase another one.

Today, for no reason, I cannot print (except to do test prints
using either the CUPS admin utility, or the redhat printer configuration utility (printconf-gui). This latter insistently
defaults to /dev/lp0, instead of /dev/usb/lp0.

So the test prints work?

... I've now spent almost a hour trying to print a letter from
Open Office or the same from Abiword. The jobs don't even *show* in the Cups config jobs list...

Can you print from the command line? Plain text? PostScript? Images?

No. ... at least, I *couldn't*... until I realised that I had not switched the
print system from LPRng to CUPS. It's not logical, though that I could
print a test page, and _only_ a test page when the print system had not yet
been switched. (I had even tried printing documents or graphics, logged
in as "root"...

-Thomas, thanks though ... I can now print anything, though

only in B & W...
