Also if my memory doesn't fail me RedHat's cups is still unable to
print to an SMB server. You only have to make a symlink in the
backends directory from cups but it was missing in 7.3 and it is still
missing in 8.0

Um.. this was fixed I think.  If not, could you please add something
to <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=65333>?

Yes, you still have to make the symlink in 8.0 as follows:
ln -s 'which smbspool' /usr/lib/cups/backend/smb
