I've come across a few sites offering me a download of ASP files. I
presumed it was a case of the server been incorrectly configured and not
parsing the ASP file correctly / sending correct text/html headers.

If you get an asp file that doesn't work -  then try it in another
browser if you have it to hand - I'd expect that it will have the same
behaviour.  One place to test off the top of my head that uses asp is
play.com - which works fine for me.
