Yes, I just checked and the kernel in rawhide does not have the 
linux-2.4.18-scheduler-fixes.patch that was introduced in the official 
kernels for 8.0 and involved changing the nice value.  I am not sure why the 
patch was originally needed but it gave vmware problems.  That is not to say 
that vmware did things correctly -- they just check the return code of nice() 
and treat a value of -1 as an error even it no error occured and the -1 was 
valid.
