I consider myself a semi-newbie to Linux although I have been trying to
abandon MS since 1996, when I first tried Mandrake and it almost destroyed
my video card. This time around I have installed Lycoris and RH8 after
wrestling with inadequate --to say the least-- partition utilities on both.
I like both distros for different reasons: Lycoris' KDE is beautiful and I
would be happy to use it daily and RH8's Gnome looks polished in a different
way, with superb font rendition that should be a standard in Linux by now
and with the excellent Open Office as standard. But I have to say that I'm
going back to XP to wait a bit more. Font rendition in Lycoris (and every
other distro except RH8) is just crap; Mozilla's fonts are a joke including
in RH8; I try installing apt and mp3 support but the specific instructions
for RH8 don't work, so I end up with neither. The same for true type fonts
as I have read in this list. A Cisco 350 wireless card in RH8 is recognized
by kernel 2.4 but is not activated unless one configures it manually,
something only Linux experts can do. Just reading this list gives me
headaches, with recompiling this, work around that and what used to work in
RH7.3 doesn't any longer in RH8 (see fonts above). If this is what the Linux
heavy hitter distro does with basic things, I wonder if Linux will ever be
more than a specialty for geeks, and I say this not with arrogance but with
sadness.
