winbind

I'm trying to configure winbind on RH 8.0.  I have it working insofar as authenticating logons against an NT PDC is concerned, but then I get this error:

"Your home directory is listed as
/home/DOMAIN/user
but it does not appear to exist.
Do you want to log in with the root
directory as your home directory?"

Well, of course not.

I'm getting the following in my /var/log/messages:

Oct 30 14:34:18 078web2 pam_winbind[847]: user '078lab+bcadmin' granted acces
Oct 30 14:34:20 078web2 gdm(pam_unix)[847]: session opened for user 078lab+bcadmin by (uid=0)
Oct 30 14:34:20 078web2 gdm[847]: gdm_slave_session_start: Home directory for 078lab+bcadmin: '/home/078LAB/bcadmin' does not exist!
Oct 30 14:36:10 078web2 gdm(pam_unix)[847]: session closed for user 078lab+bcadmin
Oct 30 14:40:56 078web2 pam_winbind[863]: request failed, PAM error was 4, NT error was NT_STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER
Oct 30 14:40:56 078web2 pam_winbind[863]: internal module error (retval = 4, user = `bcopeland'
Oct 30 14:40:56 078web2 sshd(pam_unix)[865]: session opened for user bcopeland by (uid=531)
Oct 30 14:41:03 078web2 pam_winbind[900]: request failed, PAM error was 4, NT error was NT_STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER
Oct 30 14:41:03 078web2 pam_winbind[900]: internal module error (retval = 4, user = `root'
Oct 30 14:41:03 078web2 su(pam_unix)[900]: session opened for user root by bcopeland(uid=531)
------------------------
There appear to be TWO different configuration issues here, which may or may not be related.  For now, ignore the last few lines for user "bcopeland."  That is a remote ssh login, and right now I'm interested in what is wrong with the local console login for user "078lab+bcadmin".

What it seems to boil down to is that pam_mkhomedir.so is not creating the home directory.  But why not?

Any help will be appreciated.  And if there are more appropriate mailing lists, to wit something more specifically winbind related, I'd appreciate a pointer.
