RE: new kernel-2.4.18-17.8.0 RPM damages lilo.conf file

You must not have heard about Linuxcare's BBC, or the LNX-BBC project.
Or Tom's Root Boot. Or even Red Hat's Rescue mode.

Here's your chance:
http://www.toms.net/rb/ - Fully Recovery system on a Floppy
http://www.lnxbbc.org/ - Small CD Image for System Recovery

I really have no danger of losing any data -- maybe about 2 minutes
of time, but no chance of any other problems. I want to keep my
disk space nice and lean -- and it's my box.

Since this system in question doesn't rely upon any special modules
to get it running even my obsolete boot disks should work without a
hitch -- sure I'll get some MODVERSIONS errors, but in a situation
I really wouldn't care about sound card support.

This case that I was reporting didn't even affect me as I always
check my lilo.conf file after anything that affects it -- and I
immediately saw the problem and that's why I had to report it.
It's a bug. This bug must be eliminated. Any conversations as to
specific procedures really are not applicable -- I've been using
Linux since the early 1990's -- I know what I can and cannot do.

Regards,
Chuck

Upgrading kernels is always a risky business. You _install_ them so you
keep the old one in case of accident.

Your boot floppies would not work very well as the modules they require
are not in place once the rpm --upgrade has removed the old kernel.
