RE: help howto recompile the kernel on boot floppy

I have two of these Boards. I also have had nothing but trouble installing
Linux onto it. (Both RH7.3 & 8.0). What I have noticed though, is that the
board seems to boot better with the non SMP kernel, than the SMP one. I
still haven't been able to sort it out. And like you, I have tried
everything to get it up and running. (Short of throwing it out the
window!!).

Disabling APIC, ACPI etc etc... Didn't work for me either!! Also I have
noticed that once it does start to install the OS, one might get 75% of the
way through the install and it would hang HARD!! Only way to get it up and
running again was to completely power it down.

I would be interested in finding out HOW to get this board to work with
Linux Properly!!. Also check the manual, you may need to install the single
CPU in the CPU1 socket and NOT CPU0. (As I just got hold of a Tyan S2466
Tiger MPX board) And it mentions to install the CPU in the CPU1 socket when
running only one Processor. (I couldn't do that since I was running two MP
2000+'s)

Even sending the board back to MSI didn't help. It seems this problem
happens with both their GREEN and RED boards. (I have one of each!)

Sorry that I'm not have been much help, But I too am interested to see a
solution to this problem.

Cheers,

Wolf

|mainboard MSI K7D Master-L (MS-6501) bios ver 1.3
|chipset AMD760MPX
|cpu one athlon xp 1900+
|
|When booting from cd-rom or from any of the boot images i get
|this error APIC error on cpu0:04(04) i have tried booting with
|"linux noapic" and "linux apic" but the result
|is the same.
|
|I installed the kernel-2.4.18-14.src.rpm on my 7.3
|installation and used
|compiled a kernel from the kernel-2.4.18-i386-BOOT.config config file
|and got the same error, i the edited the config and changed
|CONFIG_X86_UP_APIC=y
|CONFIG_X86_UP_IOAPIC=y
|CONFIG_X86_IO_APIC=y
|CONFIG_X86_LOCAL_APIC=y
|to
|# CONFIG_X86_UP_APIC is not set
|and compiled a new kernel and this one will allow the box to boot.
