ok, so technically, here's what i see. the printer system (like the
MTA system) uses the /etc/alternatives directory, which by default
is set to LPRng.

as i see it, i could run "redhat-switch-printer" to shift the links
over to represent CUPS and, assuming i have no interest in switching
back, i could remove a number of RPMs:

  redhat-config-printer[-gui]
  redhat-switch-printer[-gnome]
  LPRng
(any other LPRng-specific packages i missed?)

does that sound about right?

and while we're on the topic of switching printers, the default
gnome menu is a bit weird. at the top level, we find

System Settings
	Mail Transport Agent Switcher

but nothing for switching the print system. you have to go all the
way to

Extras
	System Settings
		Mail Transport Agent Switcher
		Printer System Switcher

to find the print switcher. any reason that the MTA switcher gets
higher billing in the menu structure? seems a bit backwards.
