I have a fairly similar system showing the same problems. I have an
AthlonXP 1600+ with a 1 512M DDR Chip. I have never had stability
problems on this box so I am 99.99999% sure this is not a hardware
problems. I have a clean full install of RH8.0 with the few up2dates
that were issued and a few additional packages such as the mp3 rpm for
xmms and totem with xine libraries.

When I run prelink --verbose --all everything humms along for a while
till I get to kchart.so. The last few lines of prelink output look like
this:

/usr/lib/libg-wrap-runtime-guile.so.2 412f8000-412fd000
/usr/lib/libpgeasy.so.2 4119d000-411a2000
/usr/lib/librom1394.so.0 41176000-4117b000
/usr/lib/libtkx.so.0 41324000-41329000
/usr/lib/karbon.so 41630000-41634000
/usr/lib/kchart.so 41630000-41634000
Aborted

I ran prelink once before and I don't think it aborted but when I run it
now it does. I would really like to get this resolved, prelink would be
really nice to have working.

BTW prelink doesn't crash, so there is no core file.
