Xv (Xvideo) tha API for using the hardware scaler, color space convertion and video overlay on modern chipsets. XvMC - extention to Xv to handle hardware based motion compensation and (I think) IDCT for video overlays. Only 3 drivers that I know of support this (i810, VIA's savage driver, and nvidia's binary driver). Gatos - a project that develops drivers for the video in/out, tv tuner, etc. functionality for ati all-in-wonder cards. Mesa - opensource OpenGL library. forms the basis for the opensource 3D drivers. DRI - direct rendering infrastructure. The group that develops opensource 3D drivers. Most xfree86 video drivers consist of 1 or 3 parts. 1 for 2D only drivers, 3 for 2D+3D drivers. 1. the 2D driver - the 2D server handles 2D operations and Xv 2. the 3D driver - the 3D client driver handles 3D direct rendering 3. the DRM kernel module - arbitrates access to video card for 3D (and in some cases 2D) operations That should give you the basics.
