Alex,

What I mean is that my graphics card supports a virtual mode for 1024x768
when running on the internal display and on the external monitor this shows
up as 1024x768.
When using on the internal monitor, you only see a window of 800x600 moving
the cursor off the screen (at least in windows), shows the rest of the
display.
The laptop LCD is physical 800x600.
Is this any clearer?

The laptop is a DELL Latitude LS
