OK - Upgrading to XFree-4.3.0-8 fixed the 'no screens found' error. I can now start X but the display is 'pale' - it looks like the contrast is wrong. As a matter of fact, the XFree-4.3.0-5 (and later) fixed a dri hang I was experiencing.
