Can't be of much help to you but it was a few hours ago that I finally put two and two together. I originally was having problems getting my system to 'suspend' the monitor but eventually realized it was the ATI driver that wouldn't do that...without the ATI driver installed, X suspends the monitor no problem. Also, have never gotten video to work under Linux and always assumed it was the 8500's fault which it more than likely is. However, under mplayer configed to use anything but Xv, I now have video playback. But mplayer, at least for me, consistently dies and acts a little buggy. As much as I like Linux, simple things like getting video playback has been a pain and still doesn't work that well. Being a sucker for punishment, will continue on under Linux though.
