I ran the X configuration tool again and this is what it produced.
Here is my XF86Config file and the XFree86.0 log associated with it.
My MB is GA-7DXR with an Athalon 1.44 and 256 MB of ram.
The video card is an ATI Xpert 200 pro AGP 32MB
(why do they have to choose such stupid names)
I can assure you that prior to and after my system failed to start X
I did not edit the XF86Config file.

One thing is certain though, is that your color depth is not randomly changing on it's own without some help. Why you're experiencing a crash, I have no idea, but nobody will be able to help you unless you provide more details, and post your X server log and config file on the web or ftp somewhere.
