I've seen no plans to stop the 3D work on the DRI lists. You can ask there to learn more.

Same here. but it was worse. I went to NVIDIA (from ATI) because they promissed 3D support, and even released some code. Then they went to a non-DRI, closed driver and ATI started opening up. So I switched back to ATI. Now I see ATI is not as open as they appeared to be. But at least some progress on a R200 driver has been made. I may get one soon :)

them). If open source drivers are being written, I can be assured that
evenutally I can make that upgrade w/o losing the use of my graphics
card.

2D support will surely continue. So XFree will work. Of course the XFree 2D driver release is a bit slow, so todays brand new card probably won't work for a few months.
