I'll vouch for the wireless breed. 

Skipjack v2 had been giving a long pause while loading mouse settings in
Gnome, but the recent updates fixed it.

If you use gpm for console support, my /etc/sysconfig/mouse reads:
FULLNAME="Microsoft - IntelliMouse (PS/2)"
MOUSETYPE="imps2"
XEMU3="no"
XMOUSETYPE="IMPS/2"

Or just use 'mouseconfig' and select "Microsoft Intellimouse (PS/2)" and
it'll fix up both files for you.
