I've been using kernel-2.4.17-0.6 (got from rawhide) a while ago and
XFree86-4.2.0-0.6.1 (got from mharris' ftp site). It's worked
flawlessly so I haven't bothered to update anything. 

If I were you I'd try the rpms from skipjack (or maybe install all of
skipjack if this is your home machine).
