Thanks for the response! I have indeed applied all of the errata:

lars@xxxx: ~ %  rpm -qa | grep glibc
glibc-common-2.3.2-27.9
glibc-kernheaders-2.4-8.10
glibc-2.3.2-27.9
glibc-devel-2.3.2-27.9

I did find out about the 'nosysinfo' kernel flag, and booting with it makes
Maya work happily. (NetBackup still complains, which I expected.)

I do hope another fix can be found, since nosysinfo removes the benefit of the
new threading system from the whole OS, not just Maya.
