Basically, there are things in the kernel that change depending on
compiler version, due to use of compiler features. This can affect
structure sizes, locking primitives, and other such things; if the
binary-only bits compiled with an earlier compiler don't run afoul
of this, the module may work. But it certainly can't be guaranteed.
