Thanks - I should have specified that the question was about RHEL 5.
They have changed the naming a bit - the categories are now "Desktop",
"Server", and "Advanced Platform".
This table lays out the basic "offerings" but does not say what the
differences are in available packages and functionality.

You would think it would be a no-brainer question but the information
does not seem to be available.
I'll see if I can get somebody with clear and verifiable answers from
sales :-)

yes, there is a different between the channels for server and
workstation.
the same holds true for the cds/isos.
The RHEL v.4 WS does not have all of the server tools, packages, and
functions since Red Hat sees the workstation and the server having two
different roles, purposes, and needs.
I never cared to compile a list.
You might contact Red Hat sales or support with this question.
On its face, the question is a "no-brainer".

It sounds like I need at least the "Workstation Option" with the
Desktop subscription to support 2 CPU's according to these tables -

Still I am not clear on whether there is any actual difference in the
ISO downloads or in what packages you can upgrade with the different
kinds of subscriptions. Any help would be appreciated.

Subject: RHEL Server vs. Desktop
Hi - I'm trying to understand the difference between the Red Hat
Enterprise Linux 5 Server and the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Desktop.
I downloaded the ISO images for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (5.1). It
looks like there is just one set of CD images. We are using this
system for Weblogic application development and are not interested in
personal productivity features (word processing, etc.) and we don't
particularly need high end scalability features either for
development.
Is there a difference in what channels and packages you can download
from Red Hat Network depending on whether you have the "Server" or the
"Desktop" subscription? What other differences are there between
these two kinds of subscriptions?
I have to admit I don't have the best answer but it might help. At work
we have both workstation and server. One time I installed the server on
my laptop by accident. It was bad. Many packages that you would expect
on a workstation were not installed the biggest one is OpenOffice. I was
able to install OpenOffice and a few others via yum but it was painful.
Eventually I just re-installed workstation and went on my way. From that
point on I have been careful about putting workstation on workstations
and server on servers. I think the packages are open to both workstation
and server, it appears like the product line (workstation or server)
just installs different combinations of packages based on product selection.
If you find out an official answer post it on the list. Thanks.
