You're right, dmidecode shows 8GB, and reports no errors against the DIMMs.

I used to have 32-bit Red Hat AS 3 on HP DL585 systems with 8 GB, so I
know this should work.  Also note that there's a hugemem kernel for
Red Hat AS 3, to be used on systems with +16 GB memory, which suggests
that the smp kernel should be able to handle anything lower than that.

Was the system booted with special boot options?  Did you rebuild the
kernel with special config options?
