If you're finding iptables' list of options very daunting and you have experience with something like Checkpoint FW-1, you might consider trying out fwbuilder (www.fwbuilder.com). You set up the desired firewall policy via a rules based gui interface and the app compiles the appropriate FW script from options you select.
